Winter Freeze Tips

Cold weather may be on the way, but a little preparation can go a long way in protecting your home from costly winter damage. Freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on plumbing, landscaping, and outdoor systems—but the good news is that a few simple steps can help you stay ahead of the freeze.

Here are some practical winter freeze tips every homeowner should keep in mind as temperatures drop:

🐾 Bring Pets Indoors

If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Make sure pets are safely inside where they can stay warm and comfortable during freezing weather.

🌱 Bring Plants Inside

Outdoor potted plants are especially vulnerable to frost. Bring them indoors or into a protected space like a garage to prevent damage.

🚿 Shut Off Sprinkler Systems

Turn off your sprinkler system and drain any excess water. Water left in the lines can freeze, expand, and cause pipes to crack.

🚰 Cover Outdoor Faucets and Spigots

Insulated faucet covers are inexpensive and effective. They help prevent freezing and bursting during cold nights.

🧊 Insulate Exposed Pipes

Pipes in garages, attics, or exterior walls are most at risk. Pipe insulation can significantly reduce the chance of freezing.

💧 Allow Faucets to Drip Overnight

A slow drip keeps water moving through the pipes, making them less likely to freeze during extremely cold temperatures.

🚪 Open Cabinet Doors Under Sinks

Opening cabinet doors allows warm air to circulate around pipes—especially important for sinks on exterior walls.

🏊 Keep Your Pool Pump Running

If you have a pool, keep the pump running during a freeze. Circulating water is much less likely to freeze than standing water.

Stay Safe, Stay Warm, and Protect Your Investment

Your home is one of your biggest investments, and taking these preventative steps can help you avoid expensive repairs and unnecessary stress this winter. If you have questions about preparing your home for cold weather—or if you’re thinking about buying or selling—I'm always happy to help.

Stay warm and safe this season! ❄️💜
